Ontario Auto Insurance Is Changing

What the 2026 changes mean for your coverage and what to do next.

Starting July 1, 2026, auto insurance in Ontario is becoming more flexible. Some accident benefits that were previously included in every auto insurance policy will become optional, giving you more flexibility to customize coverage to fit your needs.

A conversation with a Cowan broker can help you understand which benefits are unchanged, which are becoming optional, and above all, what makes sense for you!

What’s staying the same

Certain core accident benefits will remain on all Ontario auto insurance policies. Here are examples of the benefits you’ll automatically keep:

  • Standard medical and rehabilitation benefits
  • Attendant care benefits

You’ll also continue to have the option of purchasing additional coverage, such as supplementary medical, rehabilitation, attendant and dependant care, and indexation benefits.

What’s changing on July 1, 2026

The following accident benefits will become optional and will no longer be automatic in new auto policies. Current policies will remain unchanged unless you request that your broker makes specific adjustments.

  • Income replacement
  • Non-earner
  • Caregiver benefits
  • Lost educational expenses
  • Expenses of visitors
  • Housekeeping and home maintenance
  • Damage to personal items
  • Death benefits
  • Funeral benefits

A conversation with your broker can help you customize your coverage to fit your needs.

Who is covered on your policy?

Starting on July 1, 2026, optional accident benefits will only apply to:

  • The named insured
  • The spouse of the named insured
  • Dependants of the named insured or their spouse
  • Drivers specified in the policy

Understanding who is and isn’t covered is key to avoiding unexpected gaps or surprises.
