REMINDER! Over-age Dependants – Student Status for Ongoing Group Coverage
It’s that time of year again! Back to school is looming, which means it’s time to confirm over-age dependant student status. Although specifics may differ by insurer, in general, dependant children over the age of 21 may be eligible for continued group benefits coverage if they are:
• a full-time student; and
• over the age of 21 but under the age of 25 (26 in Quebec); and
• dependant on the plan member for maintenance and support (not working full-time).
Coverage for over-age dependants is not automatic; most insurers terminate coverage for over-age dependent children by the end of August each year unless they receive proof or confirmation of qualifying student status for the school year ahead.
To avoid a loss of coverage, now is a good time to review and implement your administrative practices for this confirmation process. This will help prevent surprises to your affected members come September.
For members, with dependant children who will leave the plan once they’ve ceased to qualify as eligible under any definition of dependant, please refer to our recent article: It’s not over ’til it’s over! Conversion options for terminating employees. Although the article references employees, the terms outlined within may also apply to dependants under certain plans.
